Morris Brandon PTA Tutor List

The Special Services Committee is providing the Morris Brandon community a list of tutors as a resource for enhancing the education of the children at Morris Brandon.  Parents find that some children need help beyond the classroom to reinforce what they are learning.  The Special Services Committee has collected names of tutors from parents and community members.  These tutors work outside of the school and are paid for their time.   All parents are strongly urged to work with your child’s teacher to determine if tutoring is appropriate and what kind of tutoring may be necessary.  Morris Brandon also has parents who volunteer as tutors during the day at school.  Your teacher has a list of the volunteer tutors.  Teachers also typically offer tutoring after school one day a week for children in their classroom.

The PTA and the school have not conducted background checks or reference checks for these tutors.  The PTA and school do not endorse these tutors but simply provides names for parents.  You are strongly urged to do background checks and get references for any tutor that you consider.  Below is a list of questions that you might use for interviewing a tutor.  If you know of any tutors that might be interested in being on the list, please contact Martha Nelson Kelley at mnkelley@bellsouth.net .

·         How many students have you tutored in the past year and for what subjects?

·         What materials and approach do you use with your tutoring?

·         What assessment tools are you using?  Parents want to ensure that a child’s issues have been correctly identified so that the tutoring is appropriate for the issues.

·         How will progress be measured?  Parents should receive periodic updates that measure the progress of a student.

·         Will the tutor communicate with the child’s teacher to ensure that the tutor and teacher can collaborate to help the child?

·         Has the tutor ever been convicted or charged with a crime?

·         Has the tutor even been accused of abusing a minor?

·         Parents should check references for a tutor to determine the quality of tutoring as well as to ensure the safety of a child with this tutor.

·         For the tutor’s reference, how long have you used the tutor?  If you are not currently using the tutor, how long ago did you use the tutor?

·         For the tutor’s reference, what kind of tutoring did you receive?

·         For the tutor’s reference, was the tutoring helpful?

·         For the tutor’s reference, what was the best part of the experience?

·         For the tutor’s reference, what was the worst part of the experience?
